Who are Science & Engineering Ambassadors (SEAs)?

Science and Engineering Ambassadors are volunteers with an interest in Science, Engineering, Technology or Mathematics (STEM) who are willing to work with schools, teachers and pupils to stimulate and inspire their interest in these subjects.

They have been briefed on working with schools and Criminal Records Bureau checked, so can offer valuable support in enhancing and enriching the curriculum, by providing a link from the classroom to the world of work.

Science and Engineering Ambassadors (or SEAs) come from all walks of life and all sectors of the community. They may be practicing as scientists, engineers or technologists in a company or they may be people with a background and interest in those areas. What is important is that they are enthusiastic about STEM subjects and can communicate their interest and passion to pupils and young people.

What do SEAs do?

SEAs are all individuals, with very different backgrounds and aspirations. They are also volunteers, so the kind of activity with which they are willing to get involved and the amount of time they can donate varies.  However, examples of the type of activity with which they can assist include:

  • Helping with classroom projects on specific areas of expertise;
  • Attending careers fairs and giving careers talks;
  • Facilitating and mentoring groups on specific projects;
  • Bringing an industrial perspective to STEM subjects and projects;
  • Supporting out-of-school activities such as after school clubs, challenges and competitions.
