F1 in Primary Schools

The F1 in Primary Schools is a competition
open to all primarys schools.  Pupils work in teams to design and manufacture CO2 powered model racing cars.

The first stage is to design their car and then produce a clay model on a supplied jig.  This clay model is then sent to the organisers who electronically scan it and manufactured a balsa wood model from the scan.  The manufactured model is then returned to the school for sanding, painting and finishing, including the attachement of axles, wheels and branding.

The teams also develop a portfolio, visual display and verbal presentation in preparation for the Northern Regional Final held in May.  At the Final they will be judged on all these aspects of their work and their cars will be scrutineerd, to ensure they are within specified regulations, and raced on a 25 metre track.

Two winning teams from the Regional Final are invited to attend the National Final of the competition in Englend each year.

The 2012 Regional Final took place at the Ulster Museum, Belfast on Wednesday 9th and Tuesday 10th May.
